The White Cloud Mountain Minnow (Tanichthys albonubes) is a highly regarded and resilient species commonly found in the aquarium trade. As its name suggests, this fish is native to the White Cloud Mountain region of China, where it shares its environment with a few other species, including the Paradise Fish (Macropodus opercularis). Although this species has been bred in tanks for decades, making it hardy, it is classified as endangered by Chinese authorities and was believed to be extinct in the wild for many years.

White Cloud Mountain Minnows typically inhabit the top and middle layers of the water column but can also be seen swimming and feeding at various depths. They are compatible with other peaceful, small fish and are known for their balanced temperament—not too shy, but not overly aggressive either. Due to their small size and gentle nature, they can coexist safely with dwarf shrimp, although they may eat some shrimp fry. They also make good tankmates with larger, peaceful invertebrates. It's essential to keep these minnows in groups of at least 6-8, although larger schools of 10 or more are preferable. Their natural habitat consists of shallow, clear waters rich in vegetation. While they can adapt to tropical conditions if the water quality is good, these minnows thrive in cooler, subtropical environments, making them suitable companions for ornamental shrimp, Stiphodon gobies, and hillstream loaches.

Though they are not picky eaters, White Cloud Mountain Minnows will flourish and maintain vibrant colors on a diverse diet primarily consisting of protein-rich foods. They readily accept high-quality flake food, pellets, and live, frozen, or freeze-dried options like Artemia, microworms, Tubifex, Calanus, and cyclops. Including some plant-based foods, such as spirulina, is also beneficial.
