Utricularia longifolia (Long-Leaved Bladderwort)
Utricularia longifolia is a large, eye-catching carnivorous plant native to eastern Brazil, where it grows in tropical areas that go through seasonal dry spells. In nature, it’s found growing on wet ground or rocks, thriving in constantly moist environments.
When grown in cultivation, it prefers an acidic, low-nutrient substrate like peat that’s kept consistently moist or wet. It does best in temperatures that stay above 10 °C, with an ideal range between 15–30 °C.
In a terrarium setup, this plant makes a great centerpiece thanks to its bold violet flowers that can grow up to 6 cm across. Its long, narrow leaves (about 12 cm) and creeping stems quickly spread, making it a great ground cover or feature plant. It can even grow in shallow standing water (1–4 cm deep), and letting water levels rise and fall a bit can encourage flowering.
The best part? No dormancy required—this plant keeps the terrarium looking lush and vibrant all year round.
