The Snake Skin Paradise Fish (Macropodus opercularis) is a stunning colour variety of one of the oldest aquarium fish in the hobby. Featuring an intricate snakeskin-style pattern across its body, vibrant finnage, and an inquisitive personality, this beautiful labyrinth fish makes an eye-catching centrepiece for cool-water and tropical aquariums.
Paradise Fish are renowned for their intelligence and bold personalities. They quickly learn to recognise their keeper and are always eager to investigate what's happening outside the aquarium. Thanks to their labyrinth organ, they can breathe atmospheric air, allowing them to thrive in environments with lower oxygen levels than many other fish.
While generally hardy and easy to care for, Paradise Fish can be territorial, particularly mature males. They are best housed with similarly sized, active tank mates and should not be kept with slow-moving fish that have long flowing fins.
Aquarium Setup
Snake Skin Paradise Fish appreciate a well-planted aquarium with driftwood, rockwork, and plenty of cover. Floating plants help diffuse lighting and provide a greater sense of security. Gentle water movement is preferred, along with open swimming areas.
A secure lid is recommended, as Paradise Fish are capable jumpers and regularly visit the surface to breathe.
Feeding
Snake Skin Paradise Fish are omnivores with a strong preference for protein-rich foods. Feed a quality floating pellet or flake as their staple diet, supplemented with frozen or live foods such as bloodworms, brine shrimp, daphnia, mosquito larvae, and blackworms to maintain excellent health and vibrant colouration.
