Flying Fox (Epalzeorhynchos kalopterus)
The Flying Fox is a sleek, active freshwater fish that’s best known for its algae-eating abilities and striking colour pattern. With its golden-brown body, bold black stripe running from nose to tail, and golden accents on the fins, this fish is both beautiful and useful in the aquarium. Unlike some similar-looking species, the Flying Fox has clear fin markings with white and orange edges on the caudal and dorsal fins.
Native to fast-flowing rivers and streams in Southeast Asia, the Flying Fox is hardy, energetic, and always on the move, making it a great addition to larger community aquariums.
Why We Love Them
-
Excellent Algae Eaters – Helps control algae growth while adding colour and activity.
-
Striking Appearance – Golden body with bold black stripe and fin highlights.
-
Active Swimmers – Adds movement and personality to community tanks.
-
Hardy & Adaptable – Suits a wide range of freshwater setups.
Tank Setup
Flying Foxes prefer aquariums with plenty of swimming space, strong water flow, and lots of hiding places created with driftwood, rocks, and plants. A tank with a tight-fitting lid is essential, as they are known jumpers. Since they are territorial as they mature, they are best kept singly unless in very large aquariums.
Feeding
Although they are famous for eating algae, Flying Foxes should not be relied on for algae control alone. They are omnivores and need a varied diet of high-quality sinking pellets, algae wafers, blanched vegetables (like zucchini or spinach), and occasional protein foods such as brine shrimp or bloodworms.
Tank Mates
Flying Foxes are generally peaceful when young but can become territorial with age, especially toward similar-looking species. They do well in community aquariums with fish of similar size and temperament, such as barbs, gouramis, rasboras, rainbowfish, and larger tetras. Avoid housing them with very small or slow-moving fish that may be harassed.
