The Discus (Symphysodon aequifasciatus) is one of the most popular and highly sought-after fish in the aquarium hobby. Native to the Amazon River basin, this gregarious species has been developed into many spectacular colour varieties through generations of selective breeding by expert aquarists.
Although it is a cichlid, the Discus differs from many of its relatives in both body shape and temperament. With its tall, rounded profile and generally peaceful nature, it makes an elegant and eye-catching display fish. While Discus were once considered very difficult to keep, advances in aquarium technology, improved breeding practices, and acclimation to a wider range of water parameters have made them far more manageable—provided their basic care requirements are met.
Habitat & Behaviour
Discus thrive in a heavily planted aquarium with driftwood and/or rock features and gentle water flow. They are somewhat reclusive and strongly prefer plant cover. Due to their tall, disc-shaped bodies, they are less likely to utilise rock caves compared to other cichlids. Slow to moderate water movement is ideal.
They are generally peaceful and compatible with other calm tankmates, provided they have ample space. Territorial behaviour is most noticeable during spawning. Dwarf shrimp and other small, delicate invertebrates are not recommended as tankmates. If breeding is desired, it is best to minimise or avoid other species unless the aquarium is very spacious.
Feeding
When healthy, Discus are enthusiastic omnivores. They require a varied diet consisting of high-quality dry, frozen, and live foods. While not primarily fish eaters, they readily accept krill, shrimp, bloodworms, and other invertebrate-based foods. Vegetable matter such as spirulina, spinach, and peas is also essential for optimal health and vibrant coloration.
