Discus (Symphysodon aequifasciatus)
The Discus is one of the most iconic and sought-after freshwater aquarium fish. Native to the Amazon River basin, this peaceful and social cichlid has been selectively bred over generations into a wide range of stunning colour varieties. Although classified as a cichlid, the Discus differs greatly from others in the family due to its tall body shape, calm nature, and elegant swimming behaviour.
Once considered a difficult species to keep, modern breeding and improved aquarium technology have made Discus far more achievable for dedicated hobbyists who can meet their basic care requirements.
Discus thrive in heavily planted aquariums with driftwood and gentle water flow. They prefer the security of plant cover rather than rock caves and require stable water conditions. When kept in groups and provided with enough space, they are generally peaceful. Territorial behaviour is usually limited to breeding periods. Due to their size and feeding habits, Discus should not be housed with dwarf shrimp or small delicate invertebrates.
Feeding and Diet
Discus are omnivorous and require a varied diet to maintain health and colour. They readily accept high quality pellets, frozen foods, and live foods such as bloodworms, krill, and shrimp. Vegetable matter is essential and should include spirulina based foods and blanched vegetables such as spinach and peas.
