These fish, known as shell-dwellers, use empty snail shells as their breeding sites, sometimes burying them in the sand for concealment. Neolamprologus brevis was previously classified under the genus Lamprologus. In their natural habitat, they occupy snail shells that have been consumed by Synodontis multipunctatus. Males are nearly twice the size of females, although young fish are difficult to differentiate by sex.

When selecting a place to spawn, these fish show fascinating behavior. If no shells are overturned, they will use their mouths to flip them. After positioning the shell with the opening facing up, they bury it by stirring the sand with their tails.

Because they are social creatures, Neolamprologus brevis should be kept in groups of five or more.
