Molly (Poecilia spp.)

The Molly is one of the most popular and visually appealing livebearers in the aquarium hobby, admired for its wide range of colour forms and easy-going nature. Decades of selective breeding have produced an impressive variety of colours and patterns, including black, green, dalmatian, golden, harlequin (calico), chocolate, albino, creamsicle, and many more.

Although Mollies originated in freshwater, brackish, and marine environments across southern North America, modern tank-bred specimens are almost exclusively raised in and thrive in alkaline freshwater aquariums. Growing to around 10–12 cm (4–5 inches) as adults, they are considered large compared to many small community fish. Despite their size, Mollies are generally peaceful, active, and outgoing, making them an excellent addition to mixed-species aquariums.

Behaviour & Compatibility

Mollies are compatible with most peaceful aquarium species when kept in a suitably sized tank. As omnivores, they may prey on very small dwarf shrimp or shrimp fry, but they are otherwise safe to keep with peaceful invertebrates. They primarily occupy the middle and upper regions of the aquarium.

Mollies are capable of jumping, particularly during the initial acclimation period, so a secure lid is strongly recommended.

Feeding

Mollies are not picky eaters and readily accept high-quality dry foods such as flakes or pellets. These should be supplemented with frozen foods, especially those containing plant matter, to support digestion, health, and colouration.

Plants & Aquascaping

Live plants are not essential, but they are appreciated. Hardy stem plants, rooted plants, mosses, and Marimo Moss Balls are generally safe to keep with Mollies, provided they are well fed. This makes them suitable for both planted and lightly decorated aquariums.

The Molly is an excellent choice for both beginner and experienced aquarists.
