The Molly is one of the most celebrated and popular livebearers in the aquarium hobby, admired for its stunning colours, active personality, and hardy nature. Over decades of selective breeding, Mollies have been developed into a huge range of colour varieties including black, dalmatian, gold, silver, orange, marble, lyretail, balloon, and many more.

Originally found in freshwater, brackish, and coastal habitats throughout Southern North America and Mexico, modern tank-bred Mollies thrive in alkaline freshwater aquariums. Compared to many small community fish, Mollies are relatively large, growing up to 10–12 cm (4–5 inches) as adults. Despite their size, they are generally peaceful, active, and make an excellent addition to spacious community aquariums.

Mollies are compatible with most other peaceful aquarium species and are best kept in well-maintained aquariums with plenty of swimming space. They are omnivorous and will readily accept a variety of high-quality dry foods, which should be supplemented with frozen foods and plant-based foods for optimal health and colouration.

These fish mostly occupy the middle and upper regions of the aquarium. They can jump, particularly when first acclimating to a new environment, so a secure lid is highly recommended.

While live plants are not essential, Mollies greatly appreciate a planted aquarium. Hardy stem plants, rooted plants, mosses, and other aquarium plants help create a more natural environment and provide additional cover. Their hardy nature and peaceful temperament make them an excellent choice for both beginner and experienced aquarists.
