L144a Blue Eye Lemon Bristlenose Pleco (Ancistrus sp.) - Juvenile
This Bristlenose Pleco variety is a truly unique and colorful addition to aquariums and serves as an excellent scavenger. We even offer adult specimens ready for breeding in home tanks!
The Blue Eye Lemon Bristlenose Pleco (Ancistrus sp.), also known as the Blue Eye Lemon Bushy Nose Pleco, belongs to the Loricariidae family of South American suckermouth catfish. Unlike many catfish species that are rarely bred in captivity, Bristlenose Plecos are among the easiest to breed in the aquarium hobby. This fish stands out with its distinctive yellow coloration, bright blue eyes, and the bristle-like growths on its face that begin to develop as it reaches sub-adulthood. While both males and females grow these bristles, males typically display longer and more pronounced growth.
Many pleco species are classified using the “L system,” where “L” refers to their family, Loricariidae. The Blue Eye Lemon Bristlenose Pleco is sometimes incorrectly associated with the “L144” classification, which likely refers to a different species that is not commonly seen or bred. Regardless of its classification, this tank-raised variety is prized for its beauty and uniqueness.
The Blue Eye Lemon Bristlenose Pleco is a hardy and peaceful species, making it a great choice for most aquariums. Unlike larger plecos like the Common Pleco (Hypostomus plecostomus), which can grow up to 20 inches, this variety stays much smaller, reaching only 4 to 5 inches (10 to 13 cm). Its manageable size makes it suitable for aquariums as small as 30 to 40 gallons. Male Blue Eye Lemon Plecos can be territorial with other males but will coexist peacefully with most other tankmates. However, they may prey on tiny dwarf shrimp fry.
Primarily nocturnal, this pleco becomes more active during the day once comfortable in a tank with ample driftwood, rocks, and hiding spots. It doesn’t consume wood as heavily as some pleco species but may benefit from small amounts of biofilm on driftwood. This species is plant-safe and will help keep algae under control, especially when young.
A diet rich in vegetables is essential for the Blue Eye Lemon Bristlenose Pleco. High-quality vegetable-based flakes, sinking algae wafers, and fresh veggies like zucchini, cucumber, spinach, or shelled peas are excellent options. Occasional protein-rich foods like bloodworms can be offered sparingly but should not dominate their diet, as excessive protein can harm their health and increase waste in the tank.
This active and stunning pleco is a rewarding choice for aquarists looking to add a vibrant and functional fish to their tank!
