Kribensis Cichlid (Pelvicachromis pulcher)
The Kribensis Cichlid, commonly known as “Krib,” is one of the most popular and rewarding dwarf cichlids in the aquarium hobby. Native to West Africa, these colourful fish are loved for their peaceful nature, manageable size, and striking colours—especially when breeding, as females display a vivid purple-red belly.
Unlike many cichlids, Kribensis are well suited to community aquariums and make an excellent choice for both beginners and experienced fishkeepers. Their fascinating behaviour, intelligence, and strong parental instincts make them a joy to observe.
Tank Setup & Care
Kribensis thrive in well-decorated aquariums with plenty of hiding places such as caves, driftwood, rocks, and clay pots. A sandy or fine gravel substrate is ideal, as they enjoy digging and rearranging their environment. They are generally plant-safe and do well in planted tanks.
While peaceful most of the time, they can become territorial during breeding, particularly around their chosen cave. Providing adequate space and multiple hiding spots helps minimise aggression.
Feeding
Kribensis are not fussy eaters and accept a wide variety of foods. Offer high-quality pellets or flakes as a staple, supplemented with frozen or live foods such as brine shrimp, bloodworms, and daphnia. Occasional vegetable matter will support overall health and vibrant coloration.
