Red Zebra Cichlid (Maylandia estherae)
The Red Zebra Cichlid is one of the most popular and colourful Mbuna cichlids from Lake Malawi. Known for its bold, fiery orange-red body and lively personality, this fish adds a real burst of colour and energy to any African cichlid aquarium. Males and females often differ in appearance—males may show shades of blue, while females typically display the classic bright orange-red tones that make this species so sought after.
Like most Mbunas, Red Zebras are active, hardy, and full of character. They are excellent for aquarists looking to build a vibrant Malawi setup with plenty of movement and personality.
Why We Love Them
-
Striking Colours – Brilliant orange-red hues (with males sometimes showing contrasting blue).
-
Active & Bold – Always on the move, making the tank lively and engaging.
-
Hardy & Adaptable – A great choice for both intermediate and experienced cichlid keepers.
-
Iconic Lake Malawi Mbuna – A must-have species for Malawi enthusiasts.
Tank Setup
Red Zebra Cichlids thrive in rocky environments that replicate their natural Lake Malawi habitat. Provide plenty of caves, rock piles, and hiding places to allow them to establish territories and reduce aggression. A sandy substrate works best, as they enjoy digging and rearranging their environment. Strong filtration and regular water changes are essential for keeping water quality stable.
Feeding
These cichlids are omnivores with a strong preference for plant-based foods. A diet high in spirulina flakes or pellets, supplemented with blanched vegetables such as zucchini, spinach, or peas, will keep them healthy. They can also be offered the occasional protein-based food like brine shrimp, but avoid too much animal protein to prevent digestive issues.
Tank Mates
Best kept with other Mbuna species of similar size and temperament. They can be territorial, especially during breeding, so plenty of space and rockwork is key. Avoid housing them with delicate or overly peaceful fish. A larger tank will help spread out aggression and allow a more natural community dynamic.
