The Golden Gourami (Trichopodus trichopterus) is a hardy, eye-catching freshwater fish that adds vibrant colour and personality to any tropical aquarium. With its stunning golden-yellow body and flowing fins, this popular gourami variety is a fantastic centrepiece fish for community tanks.

Known for their curious nature and interactive behaviour, Golden Gouramis are an excellent choice for both beginner and experienced fish keepers alike. They are active swimmers that quickly learn feeding routines and often become one of the most noticeable fish in the aquarium.

As a labyrinth fish, Golden Gouramis can breathe atmospheric air from the water’s surface thanks to a specialised organ, allowing them to tolerate a wider range of water conditions compared to many other tropical fish.

Tank & Care Requirements:

Golden Gouramis thrive in aquariums with plenty of swimming space, plants, driftwood, and hiding areas to help break up territories. While generally peaceful, males can sometimes become territorial with other gouramis or similarly shaped fish, especially in smaller tanks.

They do best in:

• Temperature: 24–28°C
• pH: 6.5–7.8
• Minimum tank size: 100L+
• Diet: Omnivore – accepts flakes, pellets, frozen foods, and live foods

Tank Mates:

Golden Gouramis are best kept with other peaceful to semi-aggressive tropical fish such as:

• Tetras
• Corydoras
• Rainbowfish
• Larger rasboras
• Peaceful barbs
• Bristlenose plecos

Avoid keeping multiple male gouramis together unless the aquarium is large and heavily decorated.
