Mikrogeophagus ramirezi – German Black Ram Cichlid

The German Black Ram Cichlid is a rare and striking variant of the ever-popular ram cichlid. Renowned for its deep, intense black coloration in both males and females, this unique dwarf cichlid is a true standout for aquarists wanting something special.

Dwarf cichlids are loved for their vibrant colours, manageable size, and engaging personalities. While generally more peaceful than larger cichlids, the German Black Ram can be slightly more assertive than other ram varieties, particularly during spawning. They also do not always breed true, adding to their rarity within the hobby.

Ideal Tank Setup

To keep these fish thriving:

  • Use a soft, sandy substrate

  • Provide plenty of hiding places such as driftwood, rocks, and clay pots

  • Include live plants, while maintaining open swimming space

They are generally peaceful but can become territorial, especially when breeding. Small shrimp and delicate invertebrates are not recommended as tankmates, though larger shrimp and snails may coexist in a well-planned aquarium.

If breeding is your goal, a species-only tank or carefully selected tankmates will help minimise stress.

Feeding

German Black Rams are not fussy eaters and will readily accept:

  • High-quality dry foods

  • Frozen foods

  • Live meaty foods

A varied, protein-rich diet is essential for maintaining health, colour intensity, and breeding condition.
