Frontosa Cichlid - Cyphotilapia frontosa
The Cyphotilapia frontosa, commonly known as the Frontosa Cichlid, is one of the most iconic and majestic species from Lake Tanganyika. Recognizable by its tall, hump-backed profile and striking blue and white coloration, this cichlid exudes elegance and presence. Mature males develop a prominent forehead hump, adding to their distinguished appearance. Known for their calm nature compared to many Lake Tanganyika species, Frontosas are admired for their peaceful disposition and impressive size.

Frontosa Cichlids are hardy, slow-growing, and exhibit intriguing behaviors, making them a favorite among advanced hobbyists looking to create a true African Rift Lake centerpiece.

Why We Love Them
Majestic Appearance – Their tall profile, hump, and vibrant blue coloration make them a stunning focal point.
Peaceful Temperament – Calm and less aggressive than many other Tanganyika cichlids, ideal for community tanks.
Hardy & Long-Lived – With proper care, they can live for over a decade, rewarding patient aquarists.
Slow Growers – Their impressive size and growth rate add a sense of achievement over time.

Tank Setup
Frontosas thrive in large, spacious tanks with plenty of open swimming areas. A sandy substrate mimics their natural habitat, with rocks and caves for hiding and territorial boundaries. Stable water conditions with excellent filtration are essential to maintain optimal water quality, as they prefer slightly alkaline, mineral-rich waters. Regular water changes help keep their environment pristine.

Feeding
As carnivores, Frontosas prefer a diet rich in high-quality pellet or frozen foods like krill, mysis shrimp, and bloodworms. Avoid overfeeding to prevent water quality issues, and feed small amounts multiple times a day for optimal health.

Tank Mates
Best kept with other large, peaceful tanganyikan cichlids or non-aggressive fish of similar size. Avoid small or overly aggressive species to prevent territorial disputes. Providing caves and hideouts helps diffuse territorial behavior and creates a comfortable environment.
