Electric Blue Jack Dempsey (Rocio octofasciata “Electric Blue”)
The Electric Blue Jack Dempsey, often called the EBJD, is the crown jewel of the “blue gene” cichlids. With its vivid, almost glowing electric blue coloration, this stunning fish is a true showstopper and a fantastic centerpiece for any cichlid enthusiast’s aquarium.
Originally thought to be a hybrid, it is now widely accepted that this striking variant is a natural colour mutation of the classic Jack Dempsey. Over the years, selective breeding has refined this line, producing healthier and more vibrant fish than earlier generations. Not only are they smaller than their wild-type cousins (maxing out around 8 inches / 20 cm), they are also typically more peaceful, making them more versatile for community-style cichlid setups.
Tank Setup & Care
EBJDs appreciate a soft sandy substrate and plenty of hiding spots such as driftwood, rocks, and clay pots. While generally plant-safe, they are natural diggers, so choose hardy plants or species that can be anchored to decor, such as Java Fern or Anubias. They are best housed with peaceful to semi-aggressive tankmates that are too large to be considered food. Avoid dwarf shrimp or small invertebrates, as they will not last long.
If you are aiming to breed this species, a species-only setup or minimal tankmates is recommended to reduce territorial aggression during spawning.
Feeding
These cichlids are not fussy eaters. They thrive on a diet rich in high-quality meaty foods such as pellets, frozen, or live options. Supplemental vegetable-based foods will also help maintain vibrant colour and overall health. Variety is key.
