Electric Blue Jack Dempsey (Rocio octofasciata "Electric Blue")

The Electric Blue Jack Dempsey—often called EBJD—is the crown jewel of the “blue gene” cichlids. With its vivid, almost glowing electric blue coloration, this stunning fish is a true showstopper and a fantastic centerpiece for any cichlid enthusiast’s aquarium.

Originally thought to be a hybrid, it’s now widely accepted that this striking variant is a natural color mutation of the classic Jack Dempsey. Over the years, selective breeding has refined this line, producing healthier, more vibrant fish than earlier generations. Not only are they smaller than their wild-type cousins (maxing out around 8"/20 cm), they’re also typically more peaceful—making them more versatile for community-style cichlid setups.

Tank Setup & Care
EBJDs appreciate a soft sandy substrate and hiding spots like driftwood, rocks, and clay pots. While generally plant-safe, they are natural diggers—so opt for hardier species or plants that can be anchored to décor (like Java Fern or Anubias). They're best housed with peaceful to semi-aggressive tankmates that are too large to be seen as a snack. Avoid dwarf shrimp or small inverts—they won’t last long!

If you're aiming to breed this species, it’s best to keep them in a species-only setup or with minimal tankmates to reduce territorial aggression during spawning.

Feeding
These cichlids aren’t fussy eaters. They thrive on a diet rich in high-quality meaty foods—pellets, frozen or live—and will also benefit from supplemental veggie-based foods to keep their colors vibrant and health in top shape. Variety is key!
