The Dwarf Rasbora (Boraras maculatus) is a small, peaceful fish that makes an excellent addition to any nano aquarium. Its friendly nature allows it to coexist safely with dwarf shrimp, making it a favorite among aquarists.

This striking nano fish is celebrated for its vibrant ruby red males and captivating schooling behavior. While it’s often confused with similar species like the Chili Rasbora (Boraras brigittae), the Dwarf Rasbora is distinguished by its unique spotting and vivid coloration.

Typically found in the top and middle levels of the aquarium, the Dwarf Rasbora thrives in groups of at least six, with larger schools of 20 or more providing a stunning display. In its natural habitat, this fish prefers slow-moving, acidic waters rich in tannins and leaf litter. For optimal health and vibrant colors, it flourishes in clean, well-maintained tanks with dark substrates and plenty of plants, especially floating ones. It’s important to avoid housing them with overly aggressive tankmates that might compete for food.

Though not a fussy eater, the Dwarf Rasbora thrives on a varied diet primarily consisting of carnivorous foods. High-quality flake food, pellets, and live, frozen, or freeze-dried options like Artemia, microworms, Tubifex, and finely chopped bloodworms are readily accepted.
