Cochu’s Blue Tetra (Boehlkea fredcochui), also known as the Blue King Tetra, is a great choice for medium to large community aquariums, especially those with plants. It’s one of the few freshwater fish with bright blue coloring, mainly found on the back half of its nearly transparent body, often with a hint of pink at the base of the tail. Males typically have more vibrant colors than females.

These tetras tend to swim in the top and middle parts of the tank but can be seen exploring and feeding in the lower areas as well. They're generally peaceful and do well with other calm fish, provided they have enough space. However, because of their active nature, they can sometimes intimidate slower fish and may nip at long-finned species, especially in smaller tanks. A larger tank reduces this behavior. They can live with larger invertebrates and possibly adult dwarf shrimp, but due to their activity levels, keeping them with shrimp is not recommended in most cases. They should always be kept in schools of six or more, and their natural colors really shine in tanks with dark substrate.

Cochu’s Blue Tetras aren't fussy eaters, but they thrive on a diet that includes a variety of meaty foods. High-quality flake food, pellets, and frozen or freeze-dried options like tubifex and bloodworms are all great choices to maintain their health and color.
