Clown Killifish are peaceful and beautifully patterned fish that are perfect for smaller tanks. Originating from the still waters and slow streams of West Africa, they do best in aquariums with minimal water movement—or even no flow at all if maintained properly.
You’ll often find them hanging out near the surface, so it’s important to keep a lid or cover on your tank (or lower the water level), as they can be jumpers. They’re plant-safe and enjoy having floating plants for cover. While they can live with other peaceful tankmates that don’t compete too hard for food, keep in mind that most other fish will eat the fry if you’re trying to breed them. For best colour and activity, keep them in groups rather than pairs.
Feeding Clown Killifish can take a little more care than other fish. They’re surface feeders and prefer live or frozen meaty foods like baby brine shrimp, daphnia, and tubifex worms. Some may take floating dry food, but it’s not ideal. Live foods like fruit flies are especially loved and really bring out their natural hunting behaviour.
