Borellii Dwarf Cichlid (Apistogramma borellii)
The Borellii Dwarf Cichlid (Apistogramma borellii) is one of the most peaceful and colourful dwarf cichlids available. Renowned for its shimmering blue iridescence, vibrant yellow colouration, and elegant flowing fins, this beautiful South American species makes an outstanding addition to planted and community aquariums.
Tank-bred specimens are hardy and adapt well to home aquariums, making them an excellent choice for both experienced aquarists and those looking to keep their first Apistogramma. Their calm temperament allows them to coexist with many peaceful community fish while still displaying the fascinating behaviours that make dwarf cichlids so popular.
Please note: We do our best to supply genuine males and females; however, due to the nature of Apistogramma, we cannot guarantee the sex of every fish.
Natural Habitat
Apistogramma borellii is native to the slow-moving rivers, streams, and flooded forest margins of Paraguay and southern Brazil. These habitats feature soft sandy substrates, dense vegetation, leaf litter, and submerged wood, creating ideal conditions for this species to thrive.
Aquarium Setup
Borellii Dwarf Cichlids appreciate a well-planted aquarium with plenty of cover.
-
Fine sand substrate is recommended.
-
Include driftwood, caves, rockwork, and leaf litter to create territories and hiding places.
-
Floating plants help diffuse lighting and make the fish feel more secure.
-
Indian Almond Leaves and alder cones can be used to create natural blackwater conditions and release beneficial tannins.
Feeding
Borellii Dwarf Cichlids are omnivores and thrive on a varied diet. Feed high-quality micro pellets or granules as a staple, supplemented with frozen or live foods such as bloodworms, brine shrimp, daphnia, mosquito larvae, and blackworms to encourage vibrant colouration and natural behaviour.
