Blue Mystery Snail – Pomacea diffusa
The Blue Mystery Snail (Pomacea diffusa) is a stunning and highly beneficial addition to freshwater aquariums. Featuring a beautiful blue-toned shell with contrasting body colours, these snails are not only eye-catching but also excellent members of a clean-up crew.
Mystery Snails are peaceful, easy to care for, and constantly active as they cruise around the aquarium searching for leftover food, algae, and detritus. Their unique personalities and curious behaviour make them a favourite among aquarists of all experience levels.
Unlike many pest snail species, Mystery Snails are larger, slower breeding, and much easier to manage in the home aquarium.
Why We Love Them:
- Stunning blue shell colouration
- Great clean-up crew for community aquariums
- Peaceful with fish and shrimp
- Fun to watch and full of personality
- Beginner friendly and hardy
Tank & Care Requirements:
Blue Mystery Snails thrive in established freshwater aquariums with stable water parameters. Calcium-rich water is important to help maintain strong, healthy shells.
They do best in:
- Temperature: 22–28°C
- pH: 7.0–8.2
- Minimum tank size: 20L+
- Diet: Algae wafers, sinking pellets, blanched vegetables, and leftover fish food
Mystery Snails are active explorers and will often climb glass, driftwood, and plants throughout the aquarium. Make sure your tank has a lid, as they are known to occasionally venture above the waterline.
Tank Mates:
Blue Mystery Snails are best kept with peaceful community fish such as:
- Tetras
- Corydoras
- Rasboras
- Gouramis
- Livebearers
- Shrimp
Avoid keeping them with aggressive snail-eating fish such as large cichlids, puffers, or loaches.
