Blue Ahli Cichlid – Sciaenochromis fryeri
The Blue Ahli Cichlid is a stunning Lake Malawi predator admired for its intense electric blue coloration and confident personality. Males develop brilliant metallic blue tones as they mature, making them one of the standout feature fish in African cichlid aquariums.
Known for their active nature and striking appearance, Blue Ahlis are a favourite among Malawi cichlid enthusiasts looking for a bold and eye-catching display fish.
Why We Love Them
- Brilliant electric blue coloration
- Excellent centerpiece fish for Malawi aquariums
- Active and full of personality
- Hardy and adaptable once established
- Stunning contrast against rockwork and dark substrates
Tank Setup
Blue Ahli Cichlids thrive in aquariums with plenty of open swimming space alongside rocky structures and caves for territory establishment. A sandy substrate is ideal and helps replicate their natural Lake Malawi environment.
Strong filtration and regular water changes are essential, as these fish appreciate clean, stable water conditions with high oxygen levels.
Feeding
Blue Ahlis are carnivorous and should be fed a high-quality diet consisting of cichlid pellets, frozen foods, brine shrimp, mysis shrimp, and other protein-rich foods.
A varied diet will help maintain their vibrant coloration and overall health.
Tank Mates
Best kept with other medium to large Malawi cichlids of similar temperament. While generally less aggressive than many Mbuna species, males can become territorial, particularly during breeding.
Avoid keeping them with very small fish, as they may be viewed as food.
