The Molly is one of the most popular and versatile livebearers in the aquarium hobby, loved for its wide range of stunning colours and patterns. Selective breeding over decades has produced countless varieties including black, dalmatian, gold, calico, albino, creamsicle, and more.

Originally found in fresh, brackish, and saltwater environments across southern North America, modern tank-bred Mollies thrive in alkaline freshwater aquariums.

Growing to around 10–12 cm (4–5 inches), Mollies are larger than many typical community fish, but their peaceful and outgoing nature makes them an excellent addition to a wide range of setups.

Behaviour & Compatibility

Mollies are peaceful, active, and social, and do well in community aquariums with other non-aggressive species.

  • Compatible with most peaceful fish
  • May eat very small shrimp or fry
  • Safe with larger peaceful invertebrates
  • Best kept in small groups in larger tanks

They tend to occupy the middle to upper levels of the tank and can occasionally jump, so a secure lid is recommended, especially during acclimation.

Tank Setup

While not essential, plants are highly beneficial and help Mollies feel more secure.

  • Suitable for planted aquariums
  • Compatible with hardy plants, mosses, and Marimo balls
  • Prefers clean, well-maintained water
  • Thrives in alkaline conditions

Mollies are omnivores and easy to feed. For best health:
