Angelfish (Pterophyllum scalare)

The Angelfish is a longtime favourite among freshwater aquarists, known for its elegant shape, graceful swimming style, and wide range of beautiful colour varieties.

Native to river systems throughout northern South America, most Angelfish available in the aquarium hobby today have been captive-bred for generations. Selective breeding has produced an impressive range of colours and patterns, making them an excellent feature fish for larger community aquariums.

Aquarium Care

Angelfish thrive in well-planted aquariums with driftwood, rocks, and areas of open swimming space. Gentle to moderate water flow is preferred.

They are generally peaceful and can be kept with other appropriately sized community fish. However, like many cichlids, they can become territorial when pairing up or spawning.

Very small fish, dwarf shrimp, and delicate invertebrates may be viewed as food. Larger shrimp and snails may be suitable tankmates in a sufficiently large aquarium.

Feeding

Angelfish are omnivorous and easy to feed. For the best health, growth, and colouration, provide a varied diet including high-quality dry foods along with frozen or live foods.

• Minimum tank size: Approximately 150L for a pair, with a larger aquarium recommended for groups

• Due to their tall body shape, aquarium height should also be considered.
