Arjuna Pods – Natural Aquarium Botanicals

Create a beautifully natural, blackwater-inspired aquarium with Arjuna Pods (Terminalia arjuna). These distinctive woody seed pods slowly release tannins and humic substances, giving the water a warm amber tint while recreating the leaf-litter environments enjoyed by many tropical fish and shrimp.

Their unique winged shape adds texture and character to aquascapes while providing small hiding places and grazing surfaces for shrimp, fry and beneficial microorganisms. Arjuna Pods are especially well suited to bettas, apistogrammas, tetras, rasboras, gouramis and freshwater shrimp.

Preparation and Use

Rinse thoroughly before use. Boil for approximately 10–15 minutes, then allow the pods to cool before adding them to the aquarium. Alternatively, soak them until waterlogged. Pods may float initially but will usually sink once fully saturated.

Add botanicals gradually and monitor your water parameters, particularly in aquariums with low carbonate hardness, as tannins may gently influence water colour and pH. Replace the pods once they have substantially broken down, or leave them to decompose naturally as part of the aquarium ecosystem.
