Discus (Symphysodon aequifasciatus)
The Discus is widely regarded as one of the most iconic and sought-after fish in the aquarium hobby. Native to the Amazon River Basin, this peaceful cichlid has been selectively bred over many generations to produce the stunning range of colours and patterns available today.
Unlike many other cichlids, Discus are known for their calm temperament, distinctive round body shape, and graceful swimming behaviour. While they were once considered difficult to keep, advances in aquarium technology and generations of captive breeding have made them far more accessible to dedicated hobbyists.
Discus thrive in warm, well-maintained aquariums with plenty of plants, driftwood, and open swimming space. They prefer gentle water flow and appreciate the security provided by dense planting. Although generally peaceful, Discus can become territorial during breeding and are best kept with other calm, compatible tank mates.
A varied diet is essential for maintaining vibrant colours and excellent health. Offer a combination of high-quality pellets, frozen foods, live foods, and vegetable-based foods for the best results.
