Blue Peacock Cichlid – Aulonocara nyassae

The Blue Peacock Cichlid is one of the most striking and sought-after species from Lake Malawi. Known for their brilliant coloration, these fish display dazzling shades of electric blue, often accented with yellows and oranges that intensify as males mature. They are admired not only for their beauty, but also for their generally calmer temperament compared to many other African cichlids.

Hardy, active, and full of personality, Blue Peacock Cichlids are an excellent choice for aquarists wanting a colourful and engaging feature fish for their Malawi aquarium.

Why We Love Them

  • Brilliant coloration that intensifies with maturity
  • More peaceful than many Mbuna cichlids
  • Hardy and adaptable
  • Active and constantly on display
  • Fantastic centerpiece fish for African cichlid aquariums

Tank Setup

Blue Peacock Cichlids thrive in aquariums with plenty of open swimming space combined with rocky structures for cover and territories. Sand substrates are highly recommended, as Peacocks naturally sift through the substrate while searching for food.

Strong filtration and regular water changes are essential to maintain the clean, oxygen-rich conditions found in Lake Malawi.

Feeding

Blue Peacock Cichlids are omnivores and should be fed a varied diet of high-quality cichlid pellets or flakes, supplemented with frozen foods such as brine shrimp, mysis shrimp, and daphnia.

Avoid excessive feeding of high-protein foods to help maintain long-term health and vibrant coloration.

Tank Mates

Best kept with other Peacock Cichlids and peaceful Haplochromis species. While less aggressive than Mbunas, males may still display territorial behaviour, particularly during breeding.

Providing plenty of space and hiding spots will help minimise aggression. Avoid housing them with highly aggressive cichlids or very small community fish.
