Blue Peacock Cichlid - Aulonocara nyassae
The Aulonocara nyassae, often known as the Peacock Cichlid, is one of the most striking and sought-after species from Lake Malawi. Known for its vibrant colours, this cichlid displays a dazzling mix of blues, yellows, and oranges that become even more intense as males mature. These fish are admired not only for their beauty but also for their generally calmer temperament compared to many other Malawi cichlids.
Peacock Cichlids are hardy, active, and full of character, making them a fantastic choice for African cichlid enthusiasts who want both colour and personality in their tank.
Why We Love Them
-
Brilliant Colouration – Vibrant blues and yellows that intensify with maturity, especially in males.
-
Peaceful (for a Cichlid) – Less aggressive than many Mbuna, making them easier to house in mixed Malawi setups.
-
Hardy & Adaptable – Great for both intermediate and advanced aquarists.
-
Active & Engaging – Always on display, bringing life and movement to the aquarium.
Tank Setup
Aulonocara nyassae thrive in aquariums with plenty of open swimming space alongside rocky structures for cover and territories. Sand substrates are ideal, as Peacocks are known to sift through the sand in search of food. Good filtration and regular water changes are essential for maintaining the pristine conditions these Lake Malawi fish enjoy.
Feeding
Peacock Cichlids are omnivores, feeding on small invertebrates in the wild. In the aquarium, they do best on a varied diet of high-quality cichlid pellets or flakes, supplemented with frozen or live foods such as brine shrimp, mysis shrimp, and daphnia. Avoid overfeeding high-protein foods to maintain their health and vibrant colour.
Tank Mates
Best kept with other Peacock Cichlids and peaceful Haplochromis species. They are less aggressive than Mbunas, but males can still show territorial behaviour. Provide enough space and hiding spots to reduce conflicts. Avoid housing them with very aggressive or overly small fish.
