Albino Red Top Ice Mbuna Cichlid (Metriaclima greshakei) – 4–5 cm

The Albino Red Top Ice Mbuna is a stunning variation of the popular Mbuna cichlid from Lake Malawi, Africa. With its pale, pearly-white body and soft orange-red highlights on the dorsal fin, this fish is truly eye-catching in any African cichlid setup. Even at 4–5 cm, these juveniles already show hints of their beautiful adult colouring, which becomes more vibrant as they mature.

Like most Mbuna, this species is active, bold, and full of personality. They make a striking addition to Malawi community tanks, especially when kept in groups.

Why We Love Them

  • Unique Colour Morph – Albino body with a glowing red/orange dorsal fin.

  • Active & Lively – Brings constant movement and personality to the aquarium.

  • Lake Malawi Classic – A hardy Mbuna species with stunning coloration as it matures.

  • Great Size – Sold at 4–5 cm, perfect for introducing into growing Malawi setups.

Tank Setup

Albino Red Top Ice Mbunas thrive in rocky environments that mimic their natural Lake Malawi habitat. Provide plenty of caves, crevices, and hiding spots made from rocks and aquascaping structures. A sandy substrate works best, as these cichlids like to dig and sift through the sand. Keep them in tanks with good filtration and regular water changes to maintain excellent water quality.

Feeding

These fish are primarily herbivores and should be fed a diet high in vegetable matter. Offer them quality spirulina flakes or pellets, along with occasional treats like blanched spinach, zucchini, or peas. Avoid excessive protein-rich foods, as these can cause digestive issues in Mbunas.

Tank Mates

Best kept with other Lake Malawi Mbuna species of similar size and temperament. They can be territorial, especially as they mature, so provide plenty of space and hiding spots to reduce aggression. Avoid housing them with overly aggressive cichlids or delicate species that can’t handle their boisterous nature.
