Albino Red Oscar (Astronotus ocellatus)

The Albino Red Oscar is a stunning white and deep red colour variation of the classic Oscar cichlid. Highly sought after by aquarium enthusiasts, this fish is known for its vibrant colouration, hardy nature, and extremely interactive personality. A true South American cichlid icon, the Albino Red Oscar makes an eye-catching and charismatic centrepiece fish for large aquariums.

Albino Red Oscars grow to a substantial but manageable size and are recognised for their intelligence and strong interaction with their owners, often responding to movement outside the tank and “begging” for food at the glass. They thrive in spacious aquariums with sand or gravel substrates and solid, well-secured décor. As natural diggers and tank rearrangers, they may uproot plants and move decorations, making artificial plants and heavy décor the best option.

While generally less aggressive than many large cichlids, Albino Red Oscars are powerful predators and will eat any fish or invertebrate small enough to fit in their mouth. Territorial behaviour becomes more noticeable during breeding, so bonded pairs are best kept in species-only setups. When raised together from a young age, they tend to coexist more peacefully with suitable large tankmates. Due to their rapid growth and adult size, a large aquarium, strong filtration, and regular water changes are essential for long-term health and water quality.

Feeding and Diet

Albino Red Oscars are enthusiastic eaters and accept a wide range of foods including high-quality pellets, frozen foods, and live meaty foods. They also benefit from some vegetable matter, which can be provided through spirulina-based foods or blanched vegetables such as spinach and shelled peas. Avoid feeding meat from mammals or birds, as this is unsuitable for their digestive system. A varied diet helps maintain strong health, growth, and vibrant red colouration.
