Pearl Gourami – Trichopodus leerii

The Pearl Gourami (Trichopodus leerii) is widely regarded as one of the most beautiful and peaceful gouramis available in the aquarium hobby. Covered in stunning pearl-like spotting across the body and fins, these elegant fish create a truly eye-catching display in any freshwater aquarium.

Adult males become even more striking as they mature, developing a vibrant orange-red throat and chest that contrast beautifully against their shimmering silver body.

Native to the slow-moving swamps and blackwater habitats of Southeast Asia, including Sumatra, Borneo, Malaysia, and Thailand, Pearl Gouramis are a labyrinth fish. This means they possess a specialised organ that allows them to breathe atmospheric air from the surface, helping them thrive in a wide range of aquarium conditions.

Why We Love Them

  • Stunning pearl-like patterning across the entire body
  • Mature males develop beautiful orange-red colouration
  • Peaceful temperament ideal for community aquariums
  • Hardy and adaptable for a wide range of setups
  • Excellent centrepiece fish for planted aquariums
  • Easy to feed and care for

Tank Setup

Pearl Gouramis thrive in well-planted aquariums with plenty of cover, driftwood, and calm areas to explore. Floating plants are highly appreciated and help them feel secure. Their colours really stand out over darker substrates and in softly lit aquariums.

These fish prefer gentle water movement rather than strong currents and are generally peaceful with other community fish. Males can become mildly territorial during breeding, but this is usually manageable in larger aquariums with plenty of hiding spaces.

While they can coexist with many peaceful tank mates and some invertebrates, very small shrimp may occasionally be viewed as food.

Feeding

Pearl Gouramis are omnivorous and not fussy eaters. They readily accept:

  • High-quality flakes and pellets
  • Frozen foods
  • Live foods such as brine shrimp, bloodworms, and daphnia

A varied diet will help maintain vibrant colouration and overall health.
